Musical practically from birth, Kath taught himself bass, drums, and guitar, and made the rounds in local bands, impressing everyone he met.
In early , Parazaider, Kath, and Seraphine formed the nucleus of what would eventually become Chicago.
A true innovator, Kath experimented endlessly with amps, guitars and equipment. While he possessed a rudimentary awareness of musical composition, he mostly just played by ear.
Other band members were in awe of his ability to hear something once and play it back. Legend has it that Jimi Hendrix , with whom Chicago toured in the early days, idolized Kath, telling Parazaider, "Your guitar player is better than me".
Listening to Kath's early recorded soloing on such tunes as "South California Purples", "Poem '58", "Listen" and "25 or 6 to 4", you'd be hard pressed to say Hendrix was wrong.
Chicago 's producer Guercio has said that Kath could have been a monster as a solo artist. That Kath never received the recognition due him as a guitar hero is old news now, but it irked him during his lifetime.
Band-mate James Pankow recalls a tour in England where Kath publicly gave the crowd the finger for comparing him unfavorably to noted greats like Eric Clapton and Page.
Listening today, aficionados are amazed at Kath's picking and, while a bit dependent upon the wah-pedal, his creativity is still dazzling.
He was capable of handling all genres, including jazz, country, metal, blues, and flat-out rock. He played a variety of guitars in his career, at one point owning nearly 20 of them.
Around , he began playing a specially decorated Fender Telecaster as his main rig. As a composer, Kath was much more hit than miss.
In , Chicago Transit Authority signed to Columbia and were soon recording their debut album, with Guercio who also controlled their management and publishing producing.
Released in April , the Chicago Transit Authority double LP distilled a dizzying array of styles, most of them in its six-and-a-half-minute opener, Introduction , written by Kath and sung in his wonderful bluesy baritone.
As well as being a phenomenal rhythm player, Kath was ceaselessly inventive on stage and in the studio. Undeterred, Guercio changed their name to Chicago after the actual Chicago Transit Authority threatened them with legal action and sent them back to the studio.
No sooner was the album out than Chicago were on a brand new Boeing on their way to Europe. At their Royal Albert Hall gig in London, each band member was introduced separately and received a standing ovation.
Recorded in the summer of , Chicago Live At Tanglewood , an unofficial but readily available album and film, offers the perfect snapshot of their outspoken guitarist.
Kath, his lank hair flying, resembles a linebacker with an electric guitar. He grins, he sways, he shuffles, he rips out an astonishing solo on 25 Or 6 To 4 , and he looks like the boss.
It was high-pitched and permeated any decibel level. That whistle was the sign that you had eight bars left, and then it was time to go back into the bridge.
But a planned Japanese tour was postponed when Robert Lamm was taken ill. Guercio suggested Loughnane, Kath, Parazaider and Cetera play the hippies.
The film soundtrack featured the exquisite Kath-sung ballad Tell Me. Cetera is also the only member of the original Chicago not to participate in the Searching For Terry film.
Did Kath plan to leave the band? Their daughter, Michelle, would be born two years later. But the partying never stopped.
In one scene, Kath is seen racing his motorcycle around the mountains. Unfortunately, Kath had acquired another dangerous hobby: guns. Building to a chaotic climax, the tune moves into a somber trombone solo backed by Terry's gorgeous, delicate Cry Baby work that captures the quiet mood after a storm has passed.
Groundbreaking, innovative music from the men of Chicago. Need some help Terry Kath fans. I am looking for the one that includes Kath's Hour in the Shower.
Which one is it? The re-mastered one that is over bucks? After they finished their tour in Japan in , the band did a series of shows in Australia.
On June 26th and 27th, they played at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. This tour was scheduled to happen in March, but Robert got sick, so it was postponed until June.
